In order to provide an accurate price, a flooring professional will need to take detailed measurements, understand the type of flooring and conditions in the home, and understand the type of flooring to be installed and its requirements. Be wary of any price you may receive in-store, online, or over the phone. Without someone visiting your home and understanding everything required to install your floors correctly, those estimates are a little better than a guess. Empire considers the following factors:

• Where Carpet Seams Meet

  Placement of carpet seams are very important and a crucial component of successful carpet installations. The flooring professional will work with you to determine high traffic areas in each room to accurately outline where seams should be placed. Seams need to be carefully positioned so they don’t end up in traffic flow areas. Otherwise, the carpet seams may fray over time.

• How Floors Transition Between Rooms

  Since you need to keep the floor pattern running in the same direction between rooms, this is a must to get right. Positioning thresholds between rooms with different flooring types is also critical to ensuring each room’s floors look cohesive.

• Wall Angles

  Not all rooms are easy-to-measure perfect squares or rectangles, especially in older homes. Even slightly-angled walls require special consideration and can change the requirements and costs associated with new floors.

• Alcoves, Cutouts, and Columns

  Alcoves, columns, and cutouts alter the way carpet or flooring needs to be installed. It’s not always as simple as going around the column or adding in the cutout. A flooring professional will accurately measure where each alcove, cutout and column is within the room to help ensure the new floors are installed correctly.

• Closets, Stairs, and Hallways

  Often overlooked in simple room-size measurements, the direction of the carpet or flooring in closets, hallways, and on stairs must also follow the same direction as the room itself to avoid color differences and help provide a cohesive look.

• Product Widths and Cuts

  Carpet is made in fixed widths, while hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, and tile flooring are bundled in cartons. Plus, there is always waste when the product is cut to fit the size of your room. You may need more product than your room measurements show to ensure the end result looks beautiful and professional.
